Patent Office

"When I wrote you last I explained the locality of this camp. I believe that we had commenced to move then. The governor and our staff were the last to move, as we were very comfortably quartered at the Patent Office, and did not care to leave until things were pretty well regulated here." A picture from "Harpers Weekly" depicting the sleeping arrangements for the 1st Rhode Island Detached Militia. The funny thing about this drawing is, that according to Henry T. Sisson's letters, the men really had to sleep on the marble floor, though an officer (as he was) had the privilege of sleeping on a portion of carpet.
