David Sisson of Providence

Portraits of Eminent Americans Now Living by John Livingston, Vol. IV, 1854

David Sisson

The man whose likeness we here present, like the few who turn aside from the beaten path, has acquired not only a local, but quite a general reputation, as an efficient, straightforward business man.  Still he has acquired less credit for actual performance than ability to perform. Commencing life with nothing to rely upon but the strength of his genius- the power of his will-the vigorous resources of his own mind, accompanied with the provisions of  gracious Providence, he has raised himself to affluence, usefulness, and great respectability.  Having attained this position without wasting his physical energies, or exhausting his mental resources, he is now bringing into requisition all these qualifications to the utmost extent, in the execution of those plans and arrangements which have been the great study of his life.

Mr. Sisson is a man of lively disposition, resolute, and very tenacious of his opinions, which never yield to compulsion, but at the same time will submit to reason and good sense.  He is full of good nature and humanity, and has a great desire to excel in whatever he undertakes.  He is not afraid of danger, or discouraged by hardships or difficulty, where anything of importance is involved.  Though of a lively disposition, he is distinguished for temperance and sobriety, while he is not dazzled with outward display, or disposed to criticize what he sees in others.

In his personal history there is much to interest.  He was born at Portsmouth, R.I., February 16th, 1803.  He is one of a family of thirteen children, seven sons and six daughters.  His father was a man of sterling integrity, of great moral worth; a man who shaped his own course and carved out his own happy destiny.  His mother was a woman of personal attraction, with bright intelligent eye, a quick and keen perception, and remarkable for the equanimity of her temper, and the deep toned piety of her soul.  She loved the service of God, and a household regulated by by the principles of his Word.  At the age of eight years he removed with his parents to the town of Newport, in the same county ; the place where in after years he received that mental training from Mr. Daniel Webb which has rendered him so efficient and successful in the business walks of life.  While yet a boy he became distinguished for his correct business habits, his scrupulous fidelity, and untiring industry.
