"I noticed that some of the monuments from other States were in position remote from their dead. The reason for this was, that there was not sufficient space, or that they were interfered with by trees and shrubbery, and we were fortunate in being able to secure a site in accordance with our wishes. I will state that I was unable to engage in general conversation. I asked the superintendent to give me an idea of where our men were buried, and I would look the graves over, and later on we would decide upon a site for the monument. It was a source of mournful satisfaction to be alone with my dead soldiers, nearly everyone of whom I knew personally" Colonel Henry Tillinghast Sisson 1908
