Rhode Island Detached Militia becomes the First Regiment Rhode Island and leaves for Washington DC.

"Very much do I regret being obliged to write you in so much haste. I hoped to have been able to have left in the boat and spent the night at home, but I am under orders and cannot leave. It is possible I may not be at Seaconnet before leaving though I shall make an effort to do so."  Henry Tillinghast Sisson. Providence, Rhode Island April 18, 1861.
